The Importance Of Mykonos To The Ancient Greeks

The island of Mykonos luxury yacht rental greece is a part of the island group of the Cyclades, and lies between four of the most major islands of said island group:

Syros, where the capital of the island group is located,

Tinos, an island with great religious significance to the locals,

Paros, known for the quality of the marble mined there,

and Naxos, the largest and most populated island of the island group.

It was first inhabited in the third millennium B.C., seemingly by Carians or Phoenicians, but historical sources pinpoint the first Greek tribe migrating to the island in the eleventh century B.C. who ousted the previous inhabitants.

The reason of said immigration was due to the island’s location, which is close to Delos, where two gods of the Greek pantheon, Artemis and Apollo, were said to be born there. Mykonos itself though was but a port island, an intermediary location housing supplies and assisting with transporting the believers to Delos.

The inhabitants themselves were worshippers mainly of Dionysus and his mother Semele, Demetra and Poseidon, and sacrificed boars, rams and lambs in their name. Hercules and his father Zeus were also significant figures for the locals since the island was where the Gigantomachy, the battle of the Olympian gods against the Giants, took place. Apollo also held importance for them since the island’s first ruler, Mykonos, who named the island, was said to be his descendant, according to Stephanus of Byzantium, a Byzantine grammarian.
