A Traditional Village In Hersonissos

Hersonissos does not mean, as in the past, mass tourism and cheap entertainment, but now it is addressed to couples of all ages, as well as families who want to relax and enjoy beautiful landscapes, good food and genuine Cretan hospitality. Hersonissos, many years ago, was a small port that served the needs of fishermen in the area. In the process it expanded, and the village became a small town, living mainly from tourism. Τoday's Hersonissos retains the name of the ancient city Hersonissos or Herronisos and has been inhabited since the Minoan years, a fact to which the good climate and the natural port created by the hill Kastri must have contributed. In Hellenistic times it was the port of the powerful city of Lyttos (near Kastamonitsa) and had its own currency, with the symbol of a ship bow.

However, it flourished after the occupation of Crete by the Romans. Its rich history is testified by the buildings that have come to light from the excavations, such as the early Christian basilicas in Kastri and Agios Nikolaos, tombs with gifts, etc. hersonissos hotels crete During the Turkish occupation, the port was used to supply the rebels and, later, the products of the region (oil and carob) were exported from here.

Despite the bad reputation that follows it due to the degraded quality of tourists, Hersonissos is not only for the "barbarians", but also for couples or families who want to spend their holidays in a beautiful place at a relaxed and calm pace. In the summer, due to the crowds, things are more "noisy", without this meaning that it is forbidden for couples and families.
